Instructions for Glue Gel Resist Dyeing and Dawn Dish Detergent Resist


INSTRUCTIONS FOR GLUE RESIST DYEING
 Materials: Fabric-100% cotton, white or a light color, washed and dried without fabric softener. Cut into manageable sizes for your samples. Setacolor Transparent Paint, thinned liquid acrylic paint, or liquid fabric paint. Acrylic paint, and fabric paint can be found at WalMart, Michael's, Joanns, Amazon or . Elmer's Washable School Glue Gel. It's clear or blue and is available everywhere. Latex or rubber gloves, plastic wrap, freezer paper, cups or jars for mixing colors, foam or chip brushes, black felt tip markers (Sharpie) and spray bottle of water.
 Technique: Designs are drawn freezer paper that is the size of the fabric.  Trace lines with marker. Iron paper to fabric. Trace the lines on fabric using the washable glue. Use the tip of the glue bottle to draw lines on the fabric. Heavy lines work better than thin ones.  When dry, the glue acts as a resist to the applied paint. The paints are brushed on. Depending upon which product is used, the paint should dry completely and heat set by ironing. Wash the glue off with warm water. Dry and iron.
Important--protect your work surface, your clothes, and your hands from the paint. All utensils must be dedicated to dyeing and never used for preparing or serving food. Cover the work surface with plastic or newspapers.
DAWN DISH DETERGENT RESIST
You can substitute Dawn for the Elmer’s Glue Gel. Let the detergent dry overnight. Paint the entire surface with a dark fabric paint such as black, purple or blue.  Let it dry.  Rinse the fabric until all soap is removed.  While it is still wet paint the areas that resisted with bright colors.  Let them run together and create new colors.
