These are my first two attempts with this Japanese method of dyeing. These photos show the sewn fabric and then the fabric as it is being discharged (black) and dyed (white)

Lauren's Quilt

Lauren is my god child and my niece. She is graduating from the Univesity of Tampa in May. The pattern for this quilt was called "It's Greek To Me". I used blue and white batiks to reflect the Greek colors. This is so much like the water and the sand. The quilting pattern is done in waves. I thought it would work well for a girl from South Florida. She is so special to me.

Hunter's quilt

Hunter, my nephew, is graduating from high school in May. He is headed to Tulane University in the fall. Although his quilt is not Tulane colors, I think I made it masculine enough to last for a longer period of time. Hunter is a pole vaulter like his dad. Last week he was at the county meet and qualified for regionals. I hope he makes it to state again this year. He is a sweetheart.

Flavor of the Month

Well I am so aggravated with myself. I made this small quilt for a Quilting Arts Challenge. Since i had sent the last one in with jpgs., I assumed that this one would be sent the same way. Wrong!!! Today is the deadline and it the photos had to be mailed in. The challenge was to illustrate a flavor of the month so this was my statement that was to be included with the entry.

I chose September when the raspberries are in abundance in our garden. It is a delight to go to the garden in the morning and gather handfuls of these jewels that are sparkling on the canes. The few that actually make it back to the kitchen are sprinkled over yogurt and drizzled with honey.
Using green and yellow cotton fabric, I pieced together a square with random sized cuts of cloth. I made rubbings of leaves and leaf stamps with oil pastels on voile. Wanting more texture in the leaves, I used green bags from the produce section of the grocery store. After assembling the pieced background, the voile and a cut out of a raspberry, I appliquéd the red fabric to the others. Wanting more texture in the leaves, I used green net bags from the produce section of the grocery store. A satin stitch was used around the edges. Satin stitching was also used around the sections of the raspberry, to which seed beads were sewn to give the highlights. Shadows were made with oil pastels. An upholstery fabric was used to make the sepals on the plant. The stem was made by couching yarn under the thread.

Elizabeth's Quilt

Just finished the baby quilt for our niece. She and her husband are adopting a baby girl from China. They have been informed that they will leave sometime in March to meet her and bring her home.

In China babies are given quilts made with 100 small colored pieces of fabric. This represents 100 good wishes for the little one. At the bottom of the quilt I embroidered "100 Good Wishes"

Bricen's sweater

Just finished my grandson Bricen's sweater and hat. The blue is very vivid, but not quite as much as it appears in this photo. I had enough yarn left over to make the hat. When he has it on, the top flops down. It called for tassels on each corner, but I just could not see Bricen with tassels . We are going to Birmingham this weekend for his 3rd birthday. Should be fun!
