Underground Railroad Quilt

A 5th grade reading class at Oakland Elementary School where I teach art had just completed reading a book about Harriet Tubman. The students were given fabric squares and examples of the patterns that were used as codes. They colored the cloth with fabric markers. I have sewn all their squares together to make the top of the quilt. I still have to get batting and backing. Then the quilting will begin.

Snow Dyeing 2011

I found this bag pattern in all the ones that I have bought in the past few years. It is fun to make and there are so many possibilities with it. It takes 2 fat quarters to make it. Fat quarters are another item that I seem to have accumulated over the years. Now I can use them without hesitation.

I made this lap quilt for my godchild. She majored in earth science. The seahorses captured her interest. I also included quilt squares that are called Moon and Star. I thought these were appropriate since her last name is Moon. I used some different techniques on this quilt such as silkscreen and spray dye.

Emma, my granddaughter, went to see Toy Story. She loves Woody and Buzz. So much so that while wearing her princess tiara insisted her mother buy her boots with the characters on them that were in the boys shoes. I made her a new napper for her naps at day care. It has a sheet attached as well as a pillow and it rolls up to tie for caring it home.

I have always loved this photograph of my mother (right) and her sister with their cousin from Virginia. I printed it on fabric. For the background I used some of my discharged fabric with leaves and evergreen needles on it. I added stamped images of leaves. On the left there is an orange produce bag with leaves "free-motion" sewn over it.

The Pieceful Mountain Quilt Guild is in the process of making a quilt to donate to the Georgia Quilt Council. They will in turn auction it off to benefit the quilt museum. This projects has been in the works for the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum which under construction in Carrolton, GA.

I designed the center square for our quilt which will be surrounded by bear paw blocks. We should finish piecing it together by the end of August. One of the long arm quilters in the guild has agreed to do the quilting on it. I am so glad to be through with my part.

Lauren is my god child and my niece. She is graduating from the Univesity of Tampa in May. The pattern for this quilt was called "It's Greek To Me". I used blue and white batiks to reflect the Greek colors. This is so much like the water and the sand. The quilting pattern is done in waves. I thought it would work well for a girl from South Florida. She is so special to me.

Hunter, my nephew, is graduating from high school in May. He is headed to Tulane University in the fall. Although his quilt is not Tulane colors, I think I made it masculine enough to last for a longer period of time. Hunter is a pole vaulter like his dad. Last week he was at the county meet and qualified for regionals. I hope he makes it to state again this year. He is a sweetheart.

Well I am so aggravated with myself. I made this small quilt for a Quilting Arts Challenge. Since i had sent the last one in with jpgs., I assumed that this one would be sent the same way. Wrong!!! Today is the deadline and it the photos had to be mailed in. The challenge was to illustrate a flavor of the month so this was my statement that was to be included with the entry.

I chose September when the raspberries are in abundance in our garden. It is a delight to go to the garden in the morning and gather handfuls of these jewels that are sparkling on the canes. The few that actually make it back to the kitchen are sprinkled over yogurt and drizzled with honey.
Using green and yellow cotton fabric, I pieced together a square with random sized cuts of cloth. I made rubbings of leaves and leaf stamps with oil pastels on voile. Wanting more texture in the leaves, I used green bags from the produce section of the grocery store. After assembling the pieced background, the voile and a cut out of a raspberry, I appliquéd the red fabric to the others. Wanting more texture in the leaves, I used green net bags from the produce section of the grocery store. A satin stitch was used around the edges. Satin stitching was also used around the sections of the raspberry, to which seed beads were sewn to give the highlights. Shadows were made with oil pastels. An upholstery fabric was used to make the sepals on the plant. The stem was made by couching yarn under the thread.

Just finished the baby quilt for our niece. She and her husband are adopting a baby girl from China. They have been informed that they will leave sometime in March to meet her and bring her home.

In China babies are given quilts made with 100 small colored pieces of fabric. This represents 100 good wishes for the little one. At the bottom of the quilt I embroidered "100 Good Wishes"

Bricen's sweater

Just finished my grandson Bricen's sweater and hat. The blue is very vivid, but not quite as much as it appears in this photo. I had enough yarn left over to make the hat. When he has it on, the top flops down. It called for tassels on each corner, but I just could not see Bricen with tassels . We are going to Birmingham this weekend for his 3rd birthday. Should be fun!

Unleashing the Inner Animal Challenge

Quilting Arts magazine had a reader challenge to find your inner animal. I depicted myself as a white persian cat. The hair is the same color. Even though I may look sweet, I can be agressive when necessary as shown by the captured mouse. However, I was not selected to be a finalist in the challenge so mine will not be in the magazine.

Athens, Greece doorway

This is the first of my new series. I have been gathering fabric and taking photos for the doorways or portals. While traveling I became intrigued by these old doors. I could let my imagine run wild as to who had passed through them, what had happened behind them, etc.

I loved the layers of paint and the revealing of colors by cracking and peeling. It is 19"x21.5". The price is $250.

Seafoam Bowl

This is my latest bowl. I wanted to give the illusion of water and green space. It is a reflection of the creek that flows past the house. The round beads have 3-dimensional frogs on them. There is a smooth green stone attached to the top of the bowl. It is 15" wide and 6" tall. This is my husband's favorite.

I finished the knitter's bag for my friend, Susie. You carry your ball of yarn in it. It has a hole in the bottem so the yarn can come through. The handles fit over your wrist so you can easily carry it as you knit. For the more coordinator knitter, you can walk and knit at the same time.

I have gone a little overboard with making bowls. I bought a bag of batik strips from Batiks, ETC. They are the perfect size. I wrap the fabric strips around cording using a glue stick to hold them at the beginning and the end of each strip. When the length of cording is complete, I zig-zag it together on the sewing machine.

This is the quilt I made in memory of my mother and father. These were photos of them when they were dating and newly weds. There are included a couple of love letters from daddy. They were married. August 4, 1940. I hope by making this quilt some of the grandchildren and great grandchildren will know a little bit about them.

These are new play clothes for the grandboys. I saw the pants at the vendors in Knoxville. I used a pattern from Walmart. It is very difficult to find solid color t-shirts. I ordered these on line, I re-created the motif that was on the fabric. The snakes continue around the t-shirt so I have shown the front and the back. I used fabric markers by Crayola. They are wonderful to work with and the stay bright after washing.

Trish's Twins' Quilts

The baby shower was suppose to be this coming Sunday. It has been postponed since the babies arrived yesterday (July 28th). They were a little early, but everyone is doing well. These are pillow cases that I made for my grandchildren. The soccer players are for Brayden and Bricen. The paper dolls and butterflies are for Emma. I also made Emma a pillowcase dress. This was a kit that I picked up in Knoxville at the AQS convention. It is made similar to the pillow cases or you can use a purchased pillow case.

Snail's Trail

This is the finished quilt that I started two years ago. I took a class in Nashville on making the snail's trail in the fast lane. It wasn't as fast as I had hoped. There were 96 squares for the queen size. It just took a lot of will power to stay with this project. Bric and Janette loved it. I gave it to Bric for his 33rd birthday which is on the 24th. I am delighted that they will enjoy it.

Invisible Children

There are thousands of children that are being stolen in Uganda and Darfur. They are forced into these radical armies. Their treatment is horrific. We are watching this happen year after year. A new movement has been organized to rescue these children. I just had to make a quilt about this dire situation because I feel so helpless. Sometimes I wish that I had the intestinal fortitude to do more. I am not sure what that would be. Then I think about the children I see at school who live in poverty. I can do something to help them and in some small way I do. It just never seems like enough.

Quilted Mah Jongg Boxes

I finished these boxes this weekend. I found a kit on the discount aisle at Walmart. It had the pattern and the stiff interfacing to construct the boxes. I used some fabric from my stash to complete them. Even had some mah jongg tile buttons for the top of the larger one. I will use these to carry all my winnings from the mj games. LOL

Collaboration

My son, Peyton, has been working on a new series of paintings. I gave him a piece of fabric and he drew one of his "Emotional Real estate" works on it. I quilted it and enhanced it with more color using fabric markers. This is such a happy visual image. It is like opening one of those trick boxes where all the spring loaded forms pop out. When you are filled with happiness and excitement, this is the visual image of how you feel. Enjoy!!

Recycled Fish

This is an example of using recycled items in a quilt. The quilt is about 18" x 24". Incorporated in the composition is a piece of netting that is usually a bag for lemons. I found bottle caps and can lids in parking lots. They had been run over by cars for quite some time. These became some of the "rocks" at the bottom of the river. I had some angelica that appears as plant life. The glass "stones" were glued on to the wallhanging.

Just finished this tote bag. It is big enough to carry a medium size dog or two cats. I purchased a packet of fabric last summer that was a fund raiser for ovarian cancer research. My mother died of ovarian cancer. I had to buy this fabric. I did not know what I was going to do with it until this past week. We had our monthly quilt guild meeting with a "tote bag" demonstration. This was perfect. I used up 99% of the fabric and now I have this great bag.

The Tree Project

The International Fiber Collaborative has organized the project that will be displayed in Huntsville, Alabama in April 2009. A full size tree will be constructed in Big Springs International Park. Participants are asked to create a 5" x 7" leaf out fiber. I have completed my leaf and will send it this week. As you can see it has shape and dimension. I have added one bead to represent moisture.

Reflections of Poe

The Raven Postcard.

In celebration of Edgar Allan Poe's 200th Birthday, a group of quilt artists are making postcards. This is my submission. Poe's image is reflected in the raven's eye. In his beak is the word "nevermore" made with beads.

These postcards will be given to a group that will auction them off. The benefits will go to Alzheimer research group.

Koi Ying and Yang

This quilt was completed for the guild challenge in December. It won 2nd place. I constructed the fish with pieces of fabric. The shading was made with oil pastels. The fish resemble very closely a couple of the koi that we have in our pond. I made the ripples with the quilting lines.

This area has been suffering from drought. Our pond became so low that the back fins on the koi were actually out of the water. We pumped water from the well to help sustain them. Finally in December we began to get some really heavy rains. The pond is back up to full.

Thanksgiving is approaching

Emma's birthday was November 20th. She is 2 years old. We are expecting her and her mom to arrive Thanksgiving Day. Bric and his family will arrive on Friday. Since Emma's mom and other grandparents are Jehovah's Witness, they do not celebrate birthdays or Christmas. But we do! We will have her party on Friday. I have ordered a large cookie with Elmo on it because she loves Elmo. I made her a quilted sweatshirt with turtles. The two Santa pillows are for the little boys to use from now until Christmas. We are so excited about everyone coming to our house.

Today we went to Big Creek Fire Station to vote in the presidential election. There were only 4 people in line in front of us. We did see a couple of our neighbors. What an exciting election! We will watch the results tonight.

My eyesight has improved enough that I finally am sewing again. Yippeee!!!! I worked yesterday and today in my sewing studio. I made several purses and some small quilts. It felt great to be working again.

Wow what a wild ride this week. Mah Jongg friends came for the weekend to play. What fun!! Tuesday the opthalmologist told me eye was doing great and he did not want to see me for 6 weeks. On the way home we could not find any gas. Finally one Kangaroo station had some. Whewwwww! I can see out of my eye now even though it is blurry. The nitric oxide bubble is finally gone.
Today it was announced that I got Teacher of The Year at my little school. What a shock since I am only part-time. I hope I get a parking space of my own like everyone else.
The stock market has been a horrow story. hopefully that will get better.

I taught my classes this past week with sunglasses on so the children would not have to look at my eye. I see a pool of water through that eye. It is as though I am submerged in liquid up to the middle of my eye. Below the surface I cannot see anything but colors. Above the surface I can see but it is very blurry. It makes it difficult to negotiate steps and walking around. I have to be very careful so I do not slip down. Even though I am able to drive, my depth of field is very challenged. I know that the vision in that eye is better than last week, but it is so frustrating. I have not been able to sew or read. I can knit so at least I have something to keep me busy.
My son and his family came from Birmingham for the weekend. They just wanted to be with me and check on me. I am so glad they came with the grandchildren, It made me feel so good. My other son joined us with his girlfriend and her little boy. We had a wonderful day going to the applehouses. We all ate supper together here at the house. Tommy fixed his oven bbq ribs. Bric made fried sweet potato chips and I made a broccolli salad. Red velvet cake for dessert. Yum!

Dealing with Detached Retina

September 12th I had an appointment at the ophthalmologist because I had light flashes in one eye when I would turn out a light in a room. A gray veil had appeared near my nose in that eye. He dilated my eyes and called me back in to examine my eyes. He said that I had a detached retina with 2 tears. He insisted that I drive to Atlanta and that I could not wait for Tommy to come and I could not stop to eat or drink. The next doctor I saw said that something had to be done that day and he was associated with Decatur Hospital which had closed the surgery department to move it. He sent me to another doctor who also insisted that I needed surgery immediately or I would lose sight in my right eye. So I had surgery at Piedmont Hospital at 9:00 p.m. Peyton drove Tommy down so he could take me back home after the surgery. We got back about 2:00 a.m.I feel fine except I have a huge bandage over my eye and I cannot see very well with one eye. I had no idea that my symptoms were so serious. Yeeech! You never know. I just wanted to let you know what had happened.I have nitrous oxide gas bubble in that eye so I cannot change altitudes or fly. He said that I could not go to work for two weeks, but we will see. I will saw the "Decatur" doctor on Tuesday the 16th in Gainesville. He said my eye was doing great and that I could go back to work on Wednesday.

This is the quilt for my niece, Kyle. It is her gift for high school graduation. Hopefully she will use it in her dorm room at the University of San Deigo. Since she grew up in Fort Lauderdale, I thought the flip flops would be the perfect image for her.

Donation purse

This is the purse that I donated for the silent auction. This auction is a benefit for Justin Elliott who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 18. He has had surgery and started radiation treatment. Most of the treatments that might be beneficial are experimental therefore they are not covered by insurance. He is a fine young man who was finishing his senior year of high school at West Georgia College. He has been accepted at NYU and is determined to go there in the fall. the community has rallied around him with many benefits and fund raisers in process. There will be a large BBQ at Ellijay United Methodist Church on April 26th which will be a part of the fund raisers that are taking place. This will be the conclusion of the silent auction.

I have finally gotten enough work together to put a shop on Etsy.com. I have started it with 5 of my purses, but I hope to add more of my work on it. It takes a lot of self motivation and discipline. I assume people set their "office" time and work during those hours.
I have decided to give my purses names which I think fits their pursonalities.

I had a commissioned work to finish during the month of February. A group of teachers in Toccoa, GA asked me to do a baby quilt for a friend of theirs. I met with one teacher at the quilt shop where we decided on the fabric. Since the juvenile fabric was printed with the Three Pigs story, we thought that it would be cute for a little boy. I cut and sewed the images so that they would tell the story in sequence. I took one of the images and made it into a small pillow to go with the crib quilt.

A Walk in the Woods

This was the guild challenge that was in December 2007. I dyed the fabric for the background and then went back and lightened some areas with a bleach solution. After completing the sewing and appliquing of the fabric, I used color pencils to add more details to the quilt. I gave it to my oldest son for his office.

Journal Quilt 2007

This was the first time that I participated in the Journal Quilt Project. I based my image on the gate to an apartment complex designed by Gaudi. I was standing in front of the gates when my husband took my photo. Behind the gates I created images of the moon to symbolize 6 months of my life. There are fireworks, sorrow, calmness and other emotions that reflect what my life was like during this period. The gates appear to be a huge web that I have been caught in but not struggling to leave. I enjoyed dying the fabric and adding bead work to create this quilt. It was on display in Houston and now is traveling with the other journal quilts.

Barcelona Postcards

I did manage to create the 4 postcards for Quilting Arts magazine. I was very disappointed when mine was not selected to be featured in the December edition. I love it anyway. It was definitely a learning experience and pushed me into more areas than I would normally have tread.
We traveled to Madrid and Barcelona in March 2007. I fell in love with Gaudi's work. I used his architectural forms to make the images on the front and back of my postcards. To connect all of the cardsm I sewed silver rings at one end. I strung beads to fit through the rings which keeps them together, but lets the viewer turn the pages.
